Our conference was designed in collaboration with Model WTO, the first simulation of its kind held in Switzerland for over twenty years, with the support of the World Trade Organization and Model WTO International, an organization created to support the emerging network-based simulations. Moreover, we were supported by the Faculty of Economics, University of Belgrade and other relevant institutions such as the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications of the Republic of Serbia and the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Primary goal of the project Model WTO Belgrade is to bring a unique opportunity of obtaining new knowledge, in an interesting and efficient way, through an interactive simulation of one of the most important international organizations, to motivated students from all over the world.
Furthermore, the knowledge our participants acquire will be beneficial for society, as they will be the future decision-makers. Representing interests of one country implies understanding not only the needs of citizens, the economic and political state in the country, but also the problems and characteristics of others with whom they need to reach different compromises, or in other words find adequate measures which generate common interests. Therefore, the situation in which our participants are found incentivizes the development of negotiation skills and the development of critical thoughts, which are some additional benefits our participants enjoy while engaging in this project.
We see potential for progress in one of the main problems of our generation, which is lack of information. By improving the level of information available to our youth, we get an opportunity to positively influence the wider society. This project is facing this issue in a different, creative manner, which can crucially affect the level of information that the general public has on this topic in their disposal.
The conference is constructed as a simulation of WTO negotiations, where students have the opportunity to get to know everything about WTO and its rules of procedure. They will be able to work on their diplomatic skills and learn through practical experience what it looks like to be a delegate/an ambassador to the World Trade Organization.
We believe that the WTO simulation conferences are of great significance for young leaders and future decision-makers. Particularly significant is the fact that after the well-known conference located in Switzerland, our simulation in Belgrade is the oldest simulation of this kind. In the meantime, the project has been established in other countries as well, such as Costa Rica, Italy and the UK, but we are proud to be the most persistent one, having two successful editions behind us and a tradition of organizing them every year, that we wish to continue in the future as well. Moreover, Model WTO Belgrade is the first ever simulation of its kind in this part of Europe and we believe that it will be the central conference of the region in the future.
